EATING AND DRINKING (KINGDOM TALK)

Eating & Drinking

Matthew 11:19 “The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds."

This was the Pharisees "summing up" and evaluation of Jesus life on earth as the promised Son of Man. He came to announce the Kingdom of God (Matt. 4:17) and used the elaborate dinners as one of His primary methods (Luke 14:7-8; 15:2; Matt. 9:11; Mark 2:16; Luke 5:33; John 13:2). His friends would prepare them also (Luke 10:40). The 5000 in Mark 6:33; 8:19 the 4000 in Mark 8:1, 9, 20 were picturesque of the King's care in His Kingdom. He spoke of fatted calf dinner parties, marriage suppers were taught, where many would come from every direction (Luke 13:29; Mark 14:25), wine will be served. They saw and heard of so much partying that women were His main supporters (Luke 8:1-3). The disciples were told to eat with all those they spoke to (Luke 10:7). They were constantly dining with people (Luke 11:37). He spoke of the inaugural dinner to the Kingdom while people were dining with Him (Luke 14:15-16). Many did not catch on (Luke 14:7-8). The finding of lost sinners was cause for His celebration (Luke 15:1, 4, 6). The return of the wayward son was cause for celebration vs. 23. He dined with Zachaeus (Luke 19:1-10). There was no Passover dinner but celebration in (Luke 22:15-16), and promises in vs. 30 that they shall be the honored guests. In (Luke 24:30) He ate twice with them, with a final meal of fish vs. 41-42.
