FASTING

Fasting

The denial of everything that interferes with intimate, direct fellowship between the life and God. We may have our symbol of fasting if we like, in a day in which we eat no food; but that is by no means essential. Fasting is a matter far deeper, far profounder. It is the life suffering the loss even of rights in order that it may come into more strenuous relationship with God. That is the deepest means of grace, and in proportion as we learn what fasting really means, we approach the infinite sources of power. G. Campbell Morgan concerning Matthew 6:16.

Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.”

(Israel) One of Daniel's which lasted 3 weeks in 10:2-3 "I did not eat any tasty food, nor did meat or wine enter my mouth, nor did I use any ointment at all, until the entire three weeks  were completed."

As to the Christian - Matt. 9:15 The fast is here mandated for the "friend of the Bridegroom" (NASB) who is known to be Israel.
"And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bride chamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast."

The Bride is not in the same state as the friend. She has His presence with her until His return. (Matt. 28:20)
"Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world."

Christ has ascended back to heaven, but He is present in every believer in the person of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17).
"And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever. Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you."

Not so for the friend who says they are awaiting His first coming. They lack the continual presence of the Son and The Holy Spirit. Cf. Luke 17:22. Fasting will come in the days of the Great Tribulation for the friend of the bridegroom.
"And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it."

DATE OF THE EXODUS

Exodus Date

1 Kings 6:1 states that : "Now it came about in the four hundred and eightieth year after the sons of Israel came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel [967/66 B.C.], in the month of Ziv which is the second month , that he began to build the house of the LORD." The temple building began 480 years after the exodus, thus fixing the date for the exodus at about 1446/45 B.C.

Also Judges 11:26 says that: "While Israel lived in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities that are on the banks of the Arnon, three hundred years, why did you not recover them within that time?"   Jephthah [one of Israel's judges] says that Israel had occupied the city of Heshboh in the land of Moab 300 years which were taken by Israel before the invasion of Canaan [cf. Num. 21:25-35]. The possession of Heshboh occurred approximately 340 years before Jephthah. He judged in 1105 B.C.

ETERNAL LIFE

Eternal Life

“And, behold, a [certain] lawyer stood up, and [tempted him], saying, Master, what shall I do to [inherit] eternal life” (Luke 10:25)?

From the “[certain]” (Obviously He knows who this certain person is. Cf. Mark 14:51; Luke 1:5; Luke 19:12) lawyer who asked how to inherit that life. Christ was asked the ultimate question for all life, “What shall I do to inherit eternal life?"  This was the life of the ages, life that is abiding, life that is full, the life that lacks limitation, life which is as broad as it is deep and as high, as it is long.

According to Jesus, a knowledge of the Father through the Son is eternal life; and knowing is a mental activity. Cf. John 17:3This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent."

My knowledge of the Father is that He has not stopped working to get me to acknowledge that He loves me although I never knew the definition of love until I discovered that He sent His Son to die in my place so that He could forgive all my sins committed against Him and His Son so that I could be allowed to enter heaven to spend eternity with Him which is what He wanted from the very beginning when I drew my first breath.

The only reason I know this is because He told me.

That is eternal life. That I might know Him, the only true God, and Jesus Christ Whom He sent.

Open His book and get to know Him and His Son and ask His Spirit, the Holy One, to teach you these things.

And again the verse says that he [tempted] Him by asking this question. [tempted him] thoroughly tested with no hostility. Testing Jesus to the utmost thorough testing. If you want to know how high any teacher thinks, ask him how to inherit eternal life.

He was aspiring to higher ground. Although a professional person, he was still searching for the fullness of life. This man was conscious of his own deficiency.

[Inherit], not earn. Not just long life, but the life which is abiding, full, with no limitations. Broad as it is high.

DRY BONES

Dry Bones

“The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones, And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry. And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest. Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.”  Ezek. 37:1-4

Have you ever preached to dry bones?

What good would it do to preach to these bones? They have no ears. It was silly and stupid. This is a picture, an illustration, of the natural man; they are all around us today. He is just as unresponsive to the spiritual message for the cross is foolishness to him. But Paul was 'determined not to know anything among you but.....Christ crucified.' "Preach the word." (1 Cor. 1:23; 2 Tim. 4:2)

The unsaved man to whom we may give the good news of the gospel is totally unable to make sense out of that message, but God tells us to give him that word. Then God in grace uses that message in that dead mind to open its ears and eyes to see the gospel. That is the way God saves men, "by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe." 1 Cor. 1:21

The Bible teaches that salvation is brought to sinners through the instrumentality of a message - the Word written or spoken - and this message in its ultimate source is a revelation from God, concerning Christ, recorded in the Scriptures, applied by the Holy Spirit, whose work through the Word is symbolized in part by the sacraments.

Dress Code of the NT

Dress Code of the NT

The Lord of Glory is Who we approach in the worship service, Whom we should invite and expect to join us, is the One Who caused a 3 day blindness with Saul of Tarsus when he came into His presence.

How is He dressed on the throne? Everyone who saw Him fell as dead men. [Stephan who was already on the ground being stoned to death saw Him standing as a caring King, also John, Paul]

Eph. 6:11 starts to list the spiritual dress.

1 Tim. 2:9 says it one ought to be dressed in proper clothing, even addressing jewelry.

Mark 15:17 The enemy dressed Him in royalty colors because He made claim to be the Royal One for the nation.

Luke 7:25 Those who lived and ruled from palaces were splendidly dressed and lived in luxury.

1 Pet. 3:3 Their external adornment here is seen to be quite extensive and while not demeaned, Paul taught limitation in some areas but the internal adornment needed their focus because of Who is being worshipped. He is my Friend, but He is also my Savior, He is also my God, He is also my Creator, He is also my Counselor, my Sovereign, He is also my Advocate, He is also my Teacher, He is also my Judge, He is also my Bridegroom.

He suffered for me, He died in my place, He comforts me, He has given me gifts of extreme value, He led me to my wife.

This is just a tidbit of Who I approach in a worship service. I want to present myself as appreciative of His love, care, and concern for me as one of His Father's servants. He is holy and should be thought of and treated as such.

Matt. 8:8 Fit dwelling to receive the Christ.

It is appalling to see what the youth think is proper or acceptable in a worship service of our day. They obviously are not considering those issues mentioned above. They are just happy to have anyone enter the worship place anymore and that is the mentality of the day. It is more sorrowful to see that the church is in such disarray to allow such array within its walls. Is that harsh or expecting too much? Maybe you ought to read the article above one more time

DESPOT

Despot

Grk. despotes, des-pot'-ace; from G1210 and  posis (a husband); an absolute ruler ("despot"):--Lord, master.

Although used in America in a negative sense, the Bible uses this term to describe Jesus Christ by His own half-brother Jude 4 as well as the apostle Peter in his second letter in 2 Pet. 2:1.

Jude 4; 2 Peter 2:1; Here He is called a Despot by Peter, the Master. What a serious thing to be under the authority of Someone Who can upset everything in our lives without consulting us, and by a word can mark for us the moment of our departure! That is the government of God. We may say He is Lord and Master and then fail to talk with Him daily and look at His word to find direction from Him but we only fool ourselves to think such nonsense. God is absolute monarch wherever He is King at all. His government is autocratic. He does not consult with us as to what He shall do with us, where He shall send us, what He would have us to do. Moreover, His government is an imperative government. He never permits us to make compromises with Him for a single moment. He speaks the word of authority and has every right to. He marks the path without ever consulting us, and having done so, our only relationship to that government is that of implicit, unquestioning, immediate obedience.
Psa. 148:8-11 says "Fire, and hail; snow, and vapors; stormy wind fulfilling his word: Mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and all cedars: Beasts, and all cattle; creeping things, and flying fowl: Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth: Both young men, and maidens; old men, and children." All under the control of the Despot and are to give Him the glory.
But they term it Mother Nature. Fools.

Samuel's mother understood this as we read her poem in 1 Sam. 2:5-10:
"The Lord killeth, and maketh alive:
"He bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.
The Lord maketh poor, and maketh rich:
He bringeth low, He also lifteth up.
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust,
He lifteth up the needy from the dunghill,
To make them sit with princes,
And inherit the throne of glory."

The song moves on:
"They that strive with the Lord shall be broken to pieces;
Against them shall He thunder in heaven:
The Lord shall judge the ends of the earth;
And He shall give strength unto His king,
And exalt the horn of His anointed."

He is the only One Who deserves and has earned the right to lead people in Bible Truth for He is that Truth in Person. See previous article. He is the only One Who has the right to show men what He meant when He gave these words to all those who wrote His instructions down that the Father gave Him in the various books of the Bible. See John 12:49. These two men knew Him well especially after the resurrection as the Holy Spirit finished the internal work they needed to comprehend His words as those words returned to their minds in flaming truth.

But look at what Peter noticed in his words of warning to all of us: "But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction." And today that warning has been almost entirely disregarded as a fairy tale. We have a multiple generation of people who after 12 years of public and private education believe we have evolved from a state of slime to an educated species that determines our own set of morals. A person who believes God alone has that right and trusts His leadership is fortunate that they don't put people on crosses anymore although some countries put these people to death as they did the Despot. And isn't it funny that it was the Gentiles who were handed the task from the men in the fancy religious robes that didn't want the Despot telling them how to interpret scripture. The whole crowd took part.

TWO GREAT SOCIETES OF THE DAY

TWO GREAT SOCIETIES OF THE DAY

In the two great societies of today where democracy is the political choice of the people, it is seen to be the vehicle that its leadership uses against its constituents unbeknownst to them. This has been the armament of the political leaders of the past as well. Those two great societies are those of Israel and the United States.
Here is how Israel used it against its people. A democracy is said to be of the people, by the people and for the people. Israel’s leader in the past gave them their choice. "And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people," Pilate “Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverts the people.” The people saw Jesus as a radical religionist ie. “And they cried out all at once, saying, away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas.” Luke 23:13, 18

God knows that "the spirit that worketh in the children of disobedience" (Eph. 2:2) is the devil and the devil loves the democratic movements of the day, for he, the devil, the god of this world brings to the forefront the thoughts of their fallen hearts. Get rid of Jesus and give us the Barabbas's of your day.

Today America has thrown out Christ in all areas of its makeup with prayer, the Ten Commandments, and the Bible being taught in school. They have chosen Barabbas twice in the last two elections. And in the next they have a choice of two other Barabbas’ characters: Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. By the way Mr. Trump made his wealth using the rules of the democratic lawmakers where he could declare bankruptcy at will and steal wealth from others to make his fortunes. There is only so much wealth in this world so they squash those below them to elevate themselves. You either get bigger or you get out is the going practice in today’s world. Hillary didn’t do badly both using the laws of the land and breaking the ones that benefitted her elevation. Truth is not the persona of either of these two choices as is the case yet with Obama.

Truth again is a Person and His name is Jesus Christ, Who made that stupendous claim “I am the Truth.” (John 14:6)  America is on a death spiral as Rome in the past. They look for a politician for the answer. Democracy in its purest form is lawlessness as I taught in my last article. America is looking for a democratic answer when a Theocratic answer is the only solution and He is coming as promised many times as prior to His first coming. The Bible needs to be taken back off the shelf and lived with on a daily basis to learn about the King Who is coming.

DEMOCRACY

Democracy

“Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.” Eph. 2:2

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapse over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship.

The average age of the world's great civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from dependency to bondage.

Government of the people, by the people, and for the people. What is hard for us to conceive is that ideal democracy would accurately be described as "lawlessness," since it is manifest that an individual or a society which is under no restraint except as self-imposed, is really under no restraint at all. To attain this ideal state is the end and purpose of present day movements; and, in order to promote these movements, that mighty spiritual intelligence who is designated "the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience"  [Eph. 2:2] very wisely, and with consummate subtlety, directs the attack, from many different quarters, against the authority of the Bible.

Not only is the Bible, with its preemptory assertion of supremacy and control over mankind, directly contrary to the democratic movement, but it is now the only real obstacle to the complete independence of humanity. If only the authority of the scriptures be gotten rid of, mankind will have attained the long-coveted state of absolute independence, which is equivalent to utter lawlessness.

DECREES

DECREES OF GOD

Decrees - 2 types from heaven above - a triune agreement before time began - predetermined by the Godhead

Causative  birth  Luke 22:22  "And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!"

Permissive  death  Matt. 18:7 "Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!"

DECREES A royal order. Decrees were proclaimed publically by criers (Jonah 3:5-7) designated "heralds" (Dan. 3:4) often throughout the territory of the monarch (1 Sam. 11:7; Ezra 1:1). Decrees were written and stored in archives for later reference (Ezra 6:1-2). Scripture attributes just decrees to divine wisdom (Prov. 8:15). Scripture also recognizes unjust decrees (Isa. 10:1). Some important decrees include: Cyrus' decree on rebuilding the Temple (Ezra 6:3-5); Esther's decree on the celebration of Purim (Esther 9:32); and the decree of Caesar Augustus which set the scene for the birth of Christ (Luke 2:1).

As King of the earth, God issues decrees regulating the world of nature (the sea, Prov. 8:29; rain, Job 28:26) and of humanity (Dan. 4:24). God also decrees the reign of the Messianic King (Ps. 2:7).

The KJV uses "decree" to describe the decision of the Apostolic Council (Acts 16:4) and of a human inward decision not to marry (1 Cor. 7:37). NIV refers to God's righteous decree of death for sinners (Rom. 1:32). NAS uses "decree" for God's law which led to disobedience and death (Col. 2:14, 20). NRSV uses "decree" to speak of God's eternal wisdom and plan for creation. Any translator using "decree" is interpreting the meaning of a more general Hebrew or Greek term, resulting in each translation using "decree" for several different words of the original language.

CONVICTION

CONVICTION

John 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”

The Ministry of the Spirit . . . . . concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment. He comes to this earth which already is convicted of these three things but now with a new message concerning these three. All 3 have a new center which is Christocentric, just as with the ministry to the Church.

Should produce activity, which is the basis of faith. If there be no conviction, faith is impossible.

This is essentially a mental concept, a change of mind about the whole relationship of the man to the way he has been living his life, with self at the center and God shut out.

John 16:8; Eph. 5:11, 13; Acts 2:37 at Pentecost; Isa. 1:18

"And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them."
"But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light."
"Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?"
"Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool."

CONVERSION

Conversion is a turning around; not in physical direction, but a moral and spiritual change; a change in the way of thinking, the outlook on life, and towards God. When a person acts on new thoughts from God salvation has transpired. Cf. repentance. Christs’ first words to the religious of his day was concerning their need to turn around and go the opposite direction with their thinking concerning God. The world today is in the same position as in His day upon earth even though they are attending their churches. The religion taught in the pulpits today tickle their ears and that is as close as they get to the Father Who will only accept worship in spirit and truth which is perfect.

COINS

COINS

Are stamped metal disks issued by a government for trade and valuation?
Old Testament: Gen. 23:16; Ex. 30:13; 2 Sam. 12:30.
New Testament: Matt. 20:2; 22:21; Mark 12:42.

Before money was invented, a man might trade or swap with a neighbor something he owned for something he wanted. Because of their intrinsic value and mobility, cattle were very popular in the barter system. Such trading took place also on a grand scale. When Hiram of Tyre agreed to furnish building materials for the Temple, Solomon pledged large annual payments in wheat and olive oil (1 Kings 5:11). Eventually the discovery and use of metals for ornaments, implements, and weapons led to their dominating the primitive exchanges. Silver, gold, and copper in various forms, such as bars, bracelets, and the like represented wealth in addition to land, cattle, and slaves. The silver shekel, weighing about four tenths of an ounce, became the standard measure. When Abraham bought the cave of Machpelah, he "weighed out ... four hundred shekels of silver" (Gen. 23:16). At that time the shekel was a weight rather than a coin.

The talent was another weight frequently associated in the Old Testament with gold and silver. The crown that David took from the king of the Ammonites weighed one talent (2 Sam. 12:30). After Judah's defeat at Megiddo, the victorious pharaoh appointed a puppet king and required the Jews to pay Egypt a heavy tribute in silver and gold (2 Kings 23:33). Although its weight varied slightly from one country to another, the talent was approximately 75 pounds.

Determining the weight and purity of any metal was a tedious business and sometimes subject to dishonesty. To establish some standards, the first coins were minted about the same time around 650 B.C. both in Greece and in Lydia of Asia Minor. Excavations in Shechem have uncovered a Greek silver coin dating after 600 B.C., about the time the Jews were returning from Babylon to Judah. The first mention of money in the Bible appears in Ezra 2:69, describing funds collected for rebuilding the Temple. The King James Version lists among other resources 61,000 "drams of gold," but the RSV has "darics of gold," (NAS, NIV, "drachmas") referring to a Persian gold coin. Years later, about 326 B.C., after Alexander overran the Persian Empire, Greek coinage was circulated widely in Palestine, according to archaeological research.

The Maccabean Revolt began in 167 B.C. Twenty-four years later (123 B.C.), Judea became an independent state, and about 110 B.C. the reigning high priest minted in bronze the first real Jewish coins. Only dominant political entities could produce silver coins. In accord with the Second Commandment, Jewish coins did not bear the image of any ruler, but they used symbols such as a wreath, a cornucopia, or the seven-branched lampstand of the Temple. Such symbols continued to be used by Herod and other appointed Jewish rulers after Palestine submitted to Roman domination. Many small copper coins from this early New Testament period have been discovered.

The coin most often mentioned in the Greek New Testament is the denarii, translated "penny" in the KJV and "denarius" in the RSV, NAS, and NIV. It was a silver coin usually minted in Rome. It carried on one side the image of the emperor (Matt. 22:21), and on the reverse might be some propaganda symbol. Of course, the "penny" translation was an attempt to equate the value of an ancient coin with a familiar one of the King James era. Its value in New Testament times can be more accurately assessed by knowing the labor that the ancient coin could buy. The denarius was the daily pay for Roman soldiers and the wage of a day laborer in Palestine (Matt. 20:21).

Another reference to silver money occurs in Matt. 26:15 in the agreement between the high priest and Judas for betraying Jesus. Although the original text mentions only "silver" with no specific coin, scholars feel that the figure "thirty" recalls the compensation required by law for killing a slave by accident (Exod. 21:32). So, Judas' pay could have been thirty silver shekels. By this time the shekel had developed from only a measure of weight to a specific coin weighing a little less than half an ounce. It is possible also that the "large money" (KJV) paid to the soldiers guarding Jesus' tomb (Matt. 28:12) referred to large silver coins or shekels.

A third coin mentioned in the New Testament was the one the poor widow put into the Temple treasury as Jesus watched (Mark 12:42). The KJV translates the original words as "two mites, which make a farthing" while the RSV reads "two copper coins, which made a penny" (NIV: "two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny." The first noun describes the smallest Greek copper coin, (lepta), and the second noun translates the Greek (quadrans) for the smallest Roman copper coin. In either case, they were the smallest coins available, but Jesus said they were greater in proportion than the other donations.

Some readers might wonder why Jesus found "changers of money sitting" in the Temple (John 2:14). Every male Jew was required to pay an annual head tax of half shekel to the Temple treasury (Exod. 30:13). At the Feast of the Passover pilgrims would come from various countries. Whatever currency they might bring, it had to be exchanged for coins that were acceptable by Jewish standards that is, bearing no symbols violating the Second Commandment. Of course a small fee was paid to the changer.

From two parables told by Jesus we get the impression that the word "talent" had come in New Testament times to represent a large sum of money instead of just a measure of weight. In Matt. 18:24, He told of a man who owed a certain king "ten thousand talents." A few chapters later He described a wealthy man assigning different responsibilities to three servants. At the reckoning time he rebuked the one who had merely hidden his talent by saying that at least he could have deposited the money to let it earn interest (Matt. 25:27). Such a talent had been estimated to have a current value of about one thousand dollars.

CHRISTS' HOUSEHOLD

Christ's Household

“Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.”

Jesus spoke of His church as a household and not as a business [Matt.24:45; Luke 12:42]. Therefore the local church polity should reflect that same mentality in both its words and its works. We do not charge for church services as the local business down the street. We need to rid the church of that mentality as well as its hierarchy.

One of the proofs of Christ's thinking is that the Holy Spirit takes up His residence inside every believer that is added. Christ therefore expects those whom are added to the great catholic body to take up their residence in a local body [Acts 2:47] and to participate in all its spiritual functions [Acts 2:42-47; Heb. 10:25]. [Note: language of 1 Cor. 12--member is used 17 times there.]

Failure to comply with the Lord's wishes withholds that gift He would impart for that particular body member [1 Cor. 12:4-5]. Thereby this local body does not have all that is needed to equip the saints, to do the work of service and the building up of that body [Eph. 4:12]. The body is therefore stymied, and a full knowledge of the Son of God is prevented and maturity is impossible for all the members.

Every member has value and all are needed [1 Cor. 12:14-27].

Note: No one who goes through a bad marriage that ends in a divorce and solves the problem by co-habiting with the next mate. No one should even consider being allowed to do that in Christ's household.

CALL, CALLING

CALL, CALLING

Invitation, summons, commission, or naming.

Old Testament - Five main uses of call appear in the Old Testament. First, "to call" means "to invite or summon." For example, God called to Adam (Gen. 3:9); Moses called the elders together (Exod. 19:7); and Joel gave a command to call a solemn assembly (Joel 1:14).

Second, the verb can have the sense of "calling on God," hence, to pray. We first meet this expression in Gen. 4:26: "Then began men to call upon the name of the Lord." (See also Psa. 79:6; 105:1; Isa. 64:7; Jer. 10:25; Zeph. 3:9). First mention of prayer in that sense.

Third, "to call" is used very often in the sense of naming, whether of things (Gen. 1:5-30; day, night, heaven, earth; Gen. 2:19, the animals), or of persons (Gen. 25:26, Jacob; 30:6-24, Jacob's sons), of a city (2 Sam. 5:9, the city of David), or of qualities (in Isa. 35:8 a way and in Exod. 12:16 a day are called holy).

Fourth, God calls by name with a view to service. The call of Moses (Exod. 3:4-22) and the call of Samuel (1 Sam. 3) are good examples.

Fifth, "to call" may be used in the sense of "to call one's own," to claim for one's own possession and to appoint for a particular destiny. Especially noticeable is Isa. 43:1, when the Lord addressed Israel: "I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine." This calling of Israel stands closely related to its election (Isa. 45:4). It thus points to the covenant relation in which Israel is called to salvation, is given its name, and has the function of God's witness.

New Testament - All the senses found in the Old Testament appear again in the New Testament. The meaning "invite/summon" is encountered principally in the parables of the great banquet (Luke 14:16-25) and the marriage feast (Matt. 22:2-10). Calling in the sense of naming has special importance in the infancy narratives (Matt. 1:21; Luke 1:60; 2:21). Calling on the name of the Lord is found in a quotation from Joel in both Acts 2:21 and Rom. 10:13. The choosing of the apostles can be expressed in terms of calling (Mark 1:20). Finally, Christ's people are those whom He has called and who are rightly called by His name (Rom. 8:28; Gal. 1:6; 1 Thess. 2:12; 1 Pet. 1:15).

The New Testament refers to the Christian life as a calling (Eph. 1:18; 4:1; 2 Tim. 1:9; Heb. 3:1; 2 Pet. 1:10). The basic call is to Christ as Lord and Savior; thus, all Christians are "called ones." It is employed in a comprehensive way to depict what has happened to those who through the Father's love are now called children of God (1 John 3:1). However, there are further callings to special ministries (Acts 13:2).

The noun "calling" takes on great significance in the New Testament, especially in the writings of Paul. First, there is the goal of calling. We are called to salvation, holiness, and faith (2 Thess. 2:13-15), to the kingdom and glory of God (1 Thess. 2:12), to an eternal inheritance (Heb. 9:15), to fellowship (1 Cor. 1:9), and to service (Gal. 1).

The means of calling is clearly stated as being through grace (Gal. 1:6) and through the hearing of the gospel (2 Thess. 2:14).

The ground of calling is specifically established in 2 Tim. 1:9. The starting point for the divine calling is not works but the purpose and grace of God in Christ Jesus.

The nature of God's calling is described as an upward (Phil. 3:14), heavenly (Heb. 3:1), holy (2 Tim. 1:9) calling. It is filled with hope (Eph. 1:18, 4:4). Christians are urged to lead lives that are worthy of their calling (Eph. 4:1; 2 Thess. 1:11). Also, they are urged to make their calling and election sure (2 Pet. 1:10). Finally, the "called, and chosen, and faithful" are with the Lamb (Rev. 17:14) indicating that those whom God called (saved) He glorified (Rom. 8:30). The stress is on the initiative of God. The one who experiences God's calling can only break forth in praise with Paul: "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!" (Rom. 11:33).

Busy-WISE UP

Busy-WISE UP

1 Kings 20:40 “And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.”

Too many are busy doing everything but what God has appointed and commanded as states 1 Kings 20:40. That is the state of supposed children of God who are doing everything under the sun and then attend church on Sunday maybe. Americanized is a previous article which says we are taught to think, act, respond, in a way that when studied originates from the arch-enemy of Jesus.

It is not out and out sin but it wastes a life that has value to Jesus and His desire to cleanse a man or woman in three ways. See previous article on wisdom. As my dad used to say, you need to wise up to what is real.

BLEMISH

BLEMISH

Matt. 5:48  "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."
A condition that disqualifies an animal as a sacrifice (Lev. 22:17-25) or a man from priestly service (Lev. 21:17-24). In the New Testament, Christ is the perfect sacrifice (without blemish, Heb. 9:14; 1 Pet. 1:19) intended to sanctify the church and remove all its blemishes (Eph. 5:27). The children of God are commanded to live lives without blemishes (Phil. 2:15; 2 Pet. 3:14). Need to get busy before it is too late? (Matt. 5:48) See Besetting Sin article.
