Word of God
A Person. And the Word is:
1. Essentially grace and truth in relation to all things.
2. That expression of grace and truth which makes them comprehensible.
3. The record of the expression of grace and truth; which record is immediately the germ and norm of interpretation.
4. The interpretation of the record of the expression of grace and truth, as they, through it, progressively unfold their meanings, and urge their claims.
All of the many colors of the infinite glory of the Eternal God are merged in the phrase the Word of God.
The merging of these colors is Light and light finally reveals all things except itself. In light I can look at everything but light. Look at the world illumined by the sun and then try to look at the sun. The only way to see it is through a glass darkly. Our summary is of that darkened glass.
He is Grace and Truth in a unity. That is Wisdom personified; the full glory of the Father; the Reason of things by which everything is tasted; the unchangeable standard of all things.
The word of God is the expression of grace and truth, becoming flesh and dwelling among us; bringing things [eternal facts] within the compass of finite intelligence. Whenever infinite things [Word] are expressed it must be through the instrumentality of the Holy Spirit [1 Cor 2:10-11].
So complete is the revelation of grace and truth that Paul could only express it inclusively declaring: "In Him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily."
The Word is the record of the expression of Grace and Truth. They are recorded for all time in the Scriptures. Men moved by the Holy Spirit. [2 Peter 1:21]. OT is literature of need, inquiry, hope. NT is that of supply, response, possession. The germ and norm for interpretation, development, and persistent and progressive application. By it we test all interpretation.
The Word of God is ever alive and powerful through the ministry of the Holy Spirit to those called to the ministry of the Word.
The ministry of the Word is only limited by the instrument and by the will of God. The final thing can never be uttered by any one man.
The Word for us is found in Jesus. We look at Him, we listen to Him, we walk with Him, and we talk to Him. It is all perfectly easy for He is of our humanity.
To serve the Word is to fulfill the highest function of which man is capable.
