Methodology
Christ came to this earth on an agreed upon mission; His method by which He would establish righteousness; redeem the sinner; create in the process, not peace but conflict; until at long last the heart of God should find rest was stated at Caesarea Philippi. After Peter made his great confession concerning the person of the Lord, He began to speak to His disciples definitely and plainly about His Cross. He declared He must go to Jerusalem, not as a victim, for He always spoke of the resurrection which lay beyond, but as a Victor having accomplished His mission. The Cross was no accident. Man's guilt was overcome by something mightier, by God's grace for this was all done by "the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God." His method was declared in 4 verses:
John 10:10;
Luke 12:49-50;
Matt. 20:28;
John 12:27-28.
The Master came to
- fulfill law and prophecy,
- to establish a life in men which shall meet the Divine requirement; but men need a dynamic, and He gives them His life, that the forces of His purity may operate in them; but He could only do this through death. By the giving of His life He declared that He would destroy the wolf, and energize the sheep.
Christ was on this earth in regard to men was for the purpose of revelation and redemption. His method for the fulfillment of His mission as to God was that of submission and co-operation. The first was suggested by His words, "I must be about My Father's business." The second was declared in the words, "My Father worketh even unto now, and I work."
