Losing Salvation – Falling Away?
Can a person fall away from Christ and lose His salvation? Many wonder if that is a possibility and some teach it as a true doctrine.
What needs to be said right at the start is that the subtlest temptation that ever assaults the hearts of the masses of Christian people especially of the struggling saint, is the temptation to doubt God's willingness to forgive! 1 John 1:9 tells me of His utter willingness to forgive and it is best for me to believe that truth.
If I the transgressor make confession, He will blot it out forever, He does none of these things easily, for behind them lies forevermore the infinite, unfathomable passion and sorrow of His heart.
Now let me say that the walk of a Christian that is a true one is one directional and continuous (proved by the present tense in Col 2:6). Continuity of faith means persistent loyalty to CHRIST as KING, and unswerving confidence in HIM as SAVIOR. The two elements are necessary for one to strive after.
The first as LORD of my life, I find myself falling and stumbling from. But as to the second let me NEVER FORGET to be confident in Him as SAVIOR. The first, as my Lord, I must continuously asks forgiveness for while the second, My Savior, I only did ONCE. Let our faith be TOWARDS God and not away as some tend to try to get us to think.
Whenever you find a people turning back from God, it is not that they are unconscious of His holiness, but they are conscious of it; not that they are unconvinced of the high ideals of His requirements, but they are convinced. They understand Him and know they are not prepared to follow. Not because they failed to apprehend His glory, but because they did apprehend His glory, but was not prepared to pay the price.
You can only hang Him on the Cross once. They that want to attempt to prove this false doctrine need to find a better verse to try to substantiate their own thinking.
Many think God as some Sentimental Being Who can be trifled with and then walked away from. They sometimes use Heb. 6:5-6 to prove their point which says: "and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame."
The problem with this verse is that it says more than they want it to say. Obviously it has another context than what they think.
Heb. 3:12 give the 2 prerequisites for being able to "fall away." You must possess an:
1. evil and
2. unbelieving heart.
These Jews had tried Him out as the Mediatorial King and thought they would receive the Kingdom blessings promised in the OT immediately, expecting them before the Kingdom's establishment which is what Paul was concerned with in 1 Cor. 4:6-13.
God calls to the highest and so calls that there can be no mistaking Him; and if men fall back after a period of following Him, it is not because of mystery, but because they were not prepared to follow.
"....a hard saying and many went back and walked no more with Him." John 6:60
