PENTECOST AND TONGUES
What was the meaning of the tongues which happened at Pentecost?
That question was asked the second it happened and was answered by the Apostle Peter. Acts 2:12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? The wrong answers started back at that point and the false answers haven’t stopped to this day.
Here was the Apostle Peter's answer.
A few days prior to Pentecost Jesus had made some promises that were still ringing in the ears of Peter. Knowing that Jesus had said He was leaving and by a method that Peter was having a lot of trouble with caused Christ to says these words of comfort for them all. He was leaving but He was coming back. In the meantime He would as soon as He reached heaven (pray) or ask the Father to send another Comforter (Holy Spirit). John 14:16 And I will pray (ask) the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.
What happened at Pentecost was the answer to what He said would happen and Peter told them this in Acts 2:32-33 This Jesus hath God (Father) raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
All this means according to Peter was that the Father resurrected Him (Jesus)from the grave and He ascended to heaven and has arrived in the throneroom at the right hand and made the request to the Father that He told He was going to make and you saw and heard the answer to that request. It was described in the first verses of Acts 2.
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
He had told them to go and wait for the arrival of the Comforter and when He uttered that word the Holy Spirit was not yet given because Jesus was not yet glorified. These men had to wait until Pentecost for the power of the Spirit. Pentecost for us is not in the future, but in the past; we enjoy the flowing fruit of what the disciples saw unfold at Pentecost. That was a spectacular startup of the church bringing Comfort to those who had lost their Master to death. The very proof of resurrection was the arrival of the Son in the throne room of God to ask the Father for another Comforter to be with the believer forever. The Spirit of God is here in all the gracious fullness and freedom and force which result from the accomplishment of the redeeming mission of the Son of God and His arrival in heaven. I need not wait ten days for the equipment of power, or ten moments. There are no more Pentecost’s other than the one that those waiting disciples experienced and which was recorded for us. Enjoy the fruit.
