PRESENT SANCTIFICATION - ITS MOTIVES

ITS MOTIVES:

Since Sanctification by the Word requires an active response on our part, certain motives are set before us to lead us in the path of holiness.

+God's own holy nature - what God is.
1 Pet. 1:15-16 "But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;" "Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy."
+God's grace and mercy - what God does.
Acts 26:19 "Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision."  The heavenly vision revealed what God has done.
Rom. 12:1 "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service."
Brethren assumes they have appropriated the blood and the mercies God does for the brethren.
Col. 3:1-6 what God has done  "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God." "Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth." "For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God." "When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory." "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:" "For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:" Hid your life in Christ. Raised you and revealed you in glory. Sat you at the right hand of God.

+ God's promises - what God will do.
2 Cor. 7:1  cf.  6:18  "Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." "And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty."

Note: All these motives are set forth in the Word. Thus we are brought to the place of submission.
