BIBLE WORDS OF SANCTIFICATION & THEIR USE - ARIZONA

The Bible Words

As employed in the King James Version, and Authorized Standard Version ASV.
            Old Testament - "kadash"
meaning - to set apart, to separate
translated generally - "sanctify" and "holy"
sometimes - "hallow", "consecrate", "dedicate", "saint", "sanctuary".

            New Testament - "Hagiazo"
meaning - to set apart, to separate
used to translate "kadash" in DO
translated generally - "sanctify", "sanctification", "holy", "holiness", "saint"
                        sometimes - "Hallow", "sanctuary"

Usage of these words in Bible

General Usage: to set apart for any special purpose. No moral connotation originally i.e. no religious meaning involved.
Deut. 23:17-18 "whore" or "harlot'! - a set-apart person in Hebrew. Prostitution was outlawed in Israel. So was homosexuality. This means that such desecrations were regarded as in a class by themselves. They were set apart. (Arizona freedom of religion law)
Gen. 38:21 "Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place." Tamar, the daughter-in-law of Judah, a widow, to whom he promised Shelah his son. But when Shelah was grown, Judah did not fulfill his promise. So Tamar conspired against Judah (Vs. 15-21). Then Judah is exposed (24-26). Levirate marriage.
Hos. 4:14 "They sacrifice with harlots." This portion is a description of the moral degradation in the northern kingdom (4:12-14). The word “harlots” is the word meaning set apart. It certainly does not mean holy or sanctified in a moral or religious sense.

General Religious usage: to set apart for God  and His use. Wrong religious use. Isa. 66:17      This means set apart from God. "They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD."
                        a. Things:         Lev. 27:14, 16  Houses and fields "Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him." "And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the LORD, shall be put to death."
Lev. 8:10-11    Tabernacle and furniture "And Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was therein, and sanctified them." "And he sprinkled thereof upon the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all his vessels, both the laver and his foot, to sanctify them."
Gen. 2:3  Sabbath Day "And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made."
Matt. 23:17-19  Gifts of money "Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?" "And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty." "Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?"

                        b. Persons:       Exod. 13:2   Firstborn "Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine."
Exod. 28:41  Priests vs. 39-40. Clothing for priests "And thou shalt embroider the coat of fine linen, and thou shalt make the mitre of fine linen, and thou shalt make the girdle of needlework." "And for Aaron's sons thou shalt make coats, and thou shalt make for them girdles, and bonnets shalt thou make for them, for glory and for beauty." "And thou shalt put them upon Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him; and shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office."                                                Exod. 19:14   Whole nation of Israel "And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes."

Note: What is sanctified belongs to God -- proof, Lev. 27:26 "Only the firstling of the beasts, which should be the LORD'S firstling, no man shall sanctify it; whether it be ox, or sheep: it is the LORD'S."

                        c. Of God Himself - "For their sakes, I sanctify myself." cf John 17:19 in his crucifixion, etc. Set apart for God's purpose. "And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth." He made it possible for others to be set apart for God's purposes. Arizona's attempt to use a church doctrine failed for too many of their society did not want to be used by God for His purposes. and too many did not want to leave their sin behind.
"Thus, will I........sanctify Myself." Ezek. 38:23 by defeating the northern army.

Moral usage: to set apart- from sin
Ezek. 37:23-28 to be accomplished at the second coming and following. "Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwellingplaces, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God." "And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them." "And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children's children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever." "Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore." "My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people." "And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore."                        1 Thess. 4:3-4 "For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:" "That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor."

Note: The ethical use grows out of religious use. How? Lev. 19:2; 1 Pet. 1:16 God is holy. Persons set aside to God must be set aside from sin. Therefore Arizona turned the law down. "Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy." "Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy."

Christian usage:     combines religious and moral
to set apart unto God -- ownership. 1 Cor. 6:20 “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”
to set, apart from sin – purity 1 Cor. 6:20 “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”

These two fundamental ideas of Christian sanctification arose in the O.T.
Gen. 2:1-3 God finished his work, and rested the seventh day and sanctified this day. "Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them." "And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made." "And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made." He labored six 24 hr. days and rested the 7th 24 hr. day to teach Israel the doctrine of sanctification.
Exod. 20:8-11 Men shall remember this day and set it apart as a holy day. "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy." "Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work:" "But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:" "For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it."

A country not following the laws of God, not wanting Him to rule over us, not following His words and attempting to enact one of His Bible doctrines, particularly sanctification which involves both separation and holiness of conduct will turn down such a doctrine as this which comes from His book and His mouth. Arizona will be one of many as this land turns from the founders dream for this country, as also God's desire at its startup, knowing where it will end up eventually, against His chosen nation as all the rest. Therefore they end up separated as the whore at the beginning of this article.

The fundamental idea is "separation" - not to make holy.
Ezek. 38:23     God sanctifies himself in the sense that all nations shall know that “I am the Lord.”
"Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD."            Ezek. 36:23     God sanctifies His Name, His name represents all that God is. This shall be accomplished by the work which God accomplishes through and in the nation of Israel.

John 10:36,      God sanctifies the Son  God set apart His Son to perform a ministry for the Godhead in the world, and sent Him to accomplish this work. "Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?"
In the Gospels there are three expressions descriptive of Jesus Christ, which are suggestive of the double fact in His Personality, a contemplation of which will aid in the study of the revealed mystery. The first of them, the Son of God, indicates the Deity of Jesus, and yet perfectly describes His humanity. Cf. John 9:35.
