MAKING GODS

GODS CALLED BY MEN

"But where are your gods which you made for yourself?” Jer. 2:28

When a man makes a god for himself according to the pattern of his own being, he makes his god like himself, an enlargement of his own imperfections. Moreover, the god which a man makes for himself will demand from him that which is according to his own nature. Men will be faithful to these gods who make demands upon them which are in harmony with the desires of their own hearts. When God calls men, it is the call of the God of holiness, purity, perfection, and love; and demands they rise to His heart. He cannot accommodate Himself to the depravity of their nature. Many are in this predicament, this includes countries. They refuse His laws and wisdom. And they attempt to change Christ into the person they think He should be. Peter made that mistake a couple of times. (John 13:13)
Whenever you find a people turning back from God, as Israel, it is not that they are unconscious of His holiness, etc., but they are conscious of it, not that they are unconvinced of His high ideals of His requirements, but they are convinced. They understand Him and know they are not prepared to follow. Not because they failed to apprehend His glory, but because they did apprehend His glory, but was not prepared to pay the price.
God calls to the highest (Matt. 5:48), and so calls that there can be no mistaking Him; and if men fall back after a period of following Him, it is not because of mystery, but because of light which they were not prepared to follow.
"a hard saying, and many went back and walked no more with Him." John 6:60
