DISCUSSION OF THE DOCTRINE OF
BAPTISM
INTRODUCTION:
INTRODUCTION:
Assuming that there are different usages of the word baptism in the N.T. it is wrong to confuse them. Extreme positions have been taken.
(1) It is extreme to make everything spirit baptism, as some have. As for instance, the Quakers.
(2) It is extreme to make everything water baptism, as some do. Many Brethren have fallen into this error.
(3) It is extreme to confuse them, taking water baptism for spirit baptism or vice-versa.
Assuming that there are different uses of the word, it is in order to determine how one may discover the true meaning.
(1) In some instances the passage will speak clearly, leaving no doubt in the mind of the reader.
(2) In other instances, one must depend upon the context. And that will settle it.
(3) In still other cases it is necessary to resort to doctrinal consideration to bring out the sense.
Note: Since so little is known about the subject of Baptism in general and very little in particular; about water baptism and especially spirit baptism, it is necessary to cover the subject carefully in order to clear understanding and the consequent blessing.
Assuming that there are different uses of the word in the N.T., a study of every appearance of the word must be made. This will involve:
(1) An examination of every passage where the word appears.
(2) An interpretation of every passage where the word appears.
(3) A classification of the passages where the word appears. Wuest. Practical Use of the Greek N.T. Pages 99-106
