SALVATION'S BESTOWALS, COMMONNESS AND CERTAINTY
AS TO ITS BENEFITS, SALVATION
BESTOWS ALL SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS
(1)
Two classic texts:
Eph. 1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.”
Eph. 1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.”
2
Pet. 1:3 “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the
knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue.”
(2)
In a sense, there are no "second" blessings cf. 1 Cor. 3:21-23 they
are all present possessions
AS TO ITS POSSESSION,
SALVATION IS SHARED BY ALL BELIEVERS ALIKE
(1) Shared
by all alike: Jude 3 - Koinos "common salvation" “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write
unto you of the common salvation”
(2) Of like
value to all: 2 Pet. 1:1 - isotimos "Like precious" “Simon Peter, a
servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us
through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.”
(3) There
may be progress in experience, but none in possession Grace never increases, just the knowledge of it - 2 Pet. 1:3
Our experience of it - 2 Pet. 3:18 cf. 1 Pet. 1:2
Our experience of it - 2 Pet. 3:18 cf. 1 Pet. 1:2
AS TO ITS FINAL ISSUE, SALVATION IS CERTAIN
BECAUSE IT PROVIDES FOR ALL POSSIBLE CONTINGENCIES.
Heb. 5:9 "Eternal Salvation" -- to be eternal, salvation must cover everything.
“And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.”
(1) It
certainty is found in God:
1 Thess. 5:24 “Faithful is He that calleth you, who also will do it.”
Phil.
1:6 “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work
in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
2 Thess. 2:13-14 “But we are bound to
give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God
hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the
Spirit and belief of the truth: Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the
obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
(2) All
possible contingencies are foreseen and provided for:
Rom. 8:28-30 From eternity to eternity “And
we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them
who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also
did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the
firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also
called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them
he also glorified.”
1
Pet. 1:3-5 Granted an inheritance, and kept for the inheritance “Blessed be the
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy
hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ
from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth
not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through
faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
