Christ's Mind so Saturated with O.T. that He often Expressed His Own Feelings in
the Language of O.T.
"My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken
me"
cf. Matt. 27:46 from Ps. 22:1
2b.
Christ Always Assumes that Scripture is of God and Hence Final in Authority
Mark 7:9-13 Moses said (8) Commandments, the word of God (13)
"And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. For Moses said, Honor thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye."
In a corrupt society, the law is seen here to get smothered by interpretation. Christ knew and spoke concerning the words of God and His commandment not fearing giving offence which would have made His moral integrety on the level of a 2nd rate politician. No teacher of the things of God, least of all the infallible Teacher, can evade this solemn responsibility by taking refuge in silence.
Luke 10:25-28 "What is written in the law?" Christ
could add nothing to the law already written on how to earn eternal life.
Matt. 22:29 Christ utterly depended on the Word. "Ye do
err, not knowing the scriptures." cf. verses 32-36.
"Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God."
"I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine. But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law?"
The Sadducees, who rejected the doctrine of resurrection, thought they could embarrass Jesus with their silly question of a woman who had married seven brothers successively. But all those who think they can find mistakes or contradictions in the Bible simply show that they know neither the Scriptures nor God’s power. Many try to invalidate scripture today with that same approach (showing their ignorance)
John 10:35 - arg. Christ goes from the lesser to the
greater. Went to an obscure passage to prove His point. Calls the Psalm the law
proving it has divine legal authority. Ps. 82:6 cf. Ex. 21:1 ff verse 6 where judges
is Elohim.
"I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High."
"Now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them. If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself. And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free: Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him for ever."
Christ Always Assumed that Old Testament Prophecy Must be Fulfilled
"How then shall the
Scriptures be fulfilled."
Matt. 26:53-54 General Passage
"Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?"
Events Which Have Taken Place, He Explains as the Fulfillment of O.T. Prophecy
Mark 14:49 "But the scriptures must be fulfilled."
cf. 46-48
"And they laid their hands on him, and took him. And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me? I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled."
John 13:18 "I speak not of you all: I know whom I have
chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me, hath
lifted up his heel against me."The confirmation in the instance of one person. There is a difference among men. This is true even among the group to whom He is now speaking. "I speak not of you all." The determining factor is the choice of the Lord. Only those whom He has chosen will follow Him completely. "I know whom I have chosen." The Scripture is thus fulfilled again. It is thus proven to be infallibly correct (Psa 41:9). "But the Scripture may be fulfilled." Deception is the method used by the enemy. The most intimate friend turns out to be the deadly enemy. "He that eateth bread with Me." Outward appearance for a time may cover the truth. Sooner or later unchanged character will show itself. Judas finally found opportunity to betray Christ. "Hath lifted up his heel against Me." To lift one's heel against someone is to turn one's back and join rank with the enemies. Jesus applied the expression to Judas, who accepted Jesus' hospitality but then plotted His arrest (John 13:18). Psalm 41:9 says that Judas was used to try to prevent the resurrection of the Son. Judas took the all things taught and misused that knowledge. Peter lifted his feet while Judas lifted his heel.
John 17:12 "And none of them is lost, but the son of
perdition: that the scripture might be fulfilled."
On Basis of Old Testament
Prophecy, He Confidently Predicts Other Events Still Future
Matt. 26:31 Smite the shepherd, sheep scattered.Matt. 21:42 Stone rejected becomes the head of the corner.
Matt. 26:64-65 "Hereafter shall ye see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven."
Makes it the Supreme Function of His Ministry to Fulfill O.T. Prophecy
Matt. 5:17 "I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill"Matt. 26:24 "The Son of man goeth as it is written of him."
John 19:28-30 Jesus knew that one prophecy still needed to be fulfilled, so he said, "I thirst." This was not mechanical. He really did thirst. However, back of this is the necessity for prophecy to be fulfilled.
TRUTH AND AUTHORITY? BY STEVE FINNELL
ReplyDeleteWhere should Christians look for God's authoritative truth? Should it be the Bible? Should it be the church of your choice or the church you belong to by chance?
The Bible was completed in 95 A.D. when the apostle John wrote Revelation. Who wrote the Bible? Was it God or was it the church?
John 14:24-26 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father's who sent me. (THE WORDS JESUS SPOKE WERE FROM GOD THE FATHER) 25 "These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all the I said to you.
The words of Jesus were from God the Father and He said that The Father would send the apostles the Holy Spirit so they could remember all that He said. The words of the apostles were God's word, their words were Scripture, their words are the Bible.
In, John 14:24-26, Jesus was not talking to the Pope, John Calvin, Martin Luther, Billy Graham, Joesph Smith Jr, Mary Baker Eddy, cardinals, bishops, elders, so-called modern day apostles, preachers, pastors, nor any one claiming to speak for God. If the church or theses men as individuals, were speaking for God by new revelation, then, we would have added books to the Bible. There would the books of the Popes, the book of John Calvin, the book of Billy Graham, the books of elders, the books of churches, the book of Joesph Smith Jr. etc.
THE BIBLE IS THE AUTHORITY IN THE CHURCH.
THE CHURCH HAS NOT BEEN GIVEN THE AUTHORITY TO CHANGE OR OVERRULE THE AUTHORITY OF THE BIBLE. THE CHURCH CANNOT ADD TO OR TAKE AWAY FROM SCRIPTURE!
