The Spiritual Obligation
Based upon the Fact that Christ is Deity
"Amen,
Amen, I am saying to you, a servant is not greater than his Lord, nor the
apostle greater than the one who sent him." John 13:16
The word greater emphasizes the difference between the Person Who speaks and the disciples.
This word
lays emphasis upon quality of Person and not quantity.
He is here
insisting that He Himself is deity and they are human.
This alone
should settle the matter of obedience. As servants and disciples they may
question the value of the authority and the teaching as one man to another. But
His own divine personality ought forever to settle this matter for them.
Since Christ
is greater in His own person than the disciples, their own spirits ought to bow
in reverential obedience to the command He is now giving.
