THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE ORDINANCE OF FEETWASHING
lb. General observations covering the
preparations for the service.
lc. Christian propriety should be observed with great care.
It is probably best for men and women to wash feet in separate rooms. If this is not observed, the moral scruples of some may lead them to abandon the service, and even the church.
2c. Orderliness in the execution of the rite is important.
All things should be done decently and in order, Confusion and chaos will destroy the effect of the service.
3c. Cleanliness should be observed at all times. Not only are folk who are cleanly apt to be repulsed by the lack of it, but disease can be scattered because of uncleanness.
4c. Attractiveness should always be sought, not merely for its own sake, but for the sake of easing the inhibitions of people and concentrating upon the truth exhibited by the rite.
2b. Specific things in the administration of the ordinance.
lc. Quarters: One must do the best he can do. A separate room for the women, and for the men, is best. But it may be necessary to use the same room, and depend upon curtains. If possible, handle all the men and women at once.
2c. Equipment: This will depend upon the church where you are. Tubs, towels, plenty of clean warm water, equipment for the washing of hands after the rite.
If possible, use basins, and change water and towel every time.
3. Assistants: These are usually deacons or those appointed to assist. See that they are fully instructed. Leave nothing to chance.
4c. Arrangements: Put chairs or benches in place. Plan for the movement about, the hanging of coats, washing of hands, the return to the table.
5c. Teaching: While a sermon should be preached to prepare the people for the occasion; and perhaps some instruction given just before leaving the tables, it is wise just before the event, when ready to participate, that some effort be made to call its significance to their attention.
6c. Time: The season and frequency must be determined by action of the church. At least twice a year and if possible four times a year. The day in the week must also be determined by the church.
