The Demonstration of the Blessed Nature by Perpetuating

"If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me." John 13:17-18

1d. The certainty clearly stated by the Lord.
"If (since) these things you know."
What things? Since they did not know the meaning of the thing He had just performed, this could not refer to that. But there are some things they did know -
1. They knew that as Lord He had the right to command and be obeyed.
2. They knew that as Teacher He was able to teach and be believed.
3. They knew that as greater than they He may be followed.
2d. The condition in the conduct of believers.
"If ye are doing them"
This very clearly states the condition, namely, that believers be in the habit of doing these things, that is, believing the Teacher, obeying the Lord, and following the example He has given.
3d. The conclusion as to the character of such people.
"Ye are happy (blessed)"
This particular word lays emphasis upon inward character and consciousness. It is the same word used in the beatitudes. It is practically equivalent to the expression born-again. It is therefore evident that conduct demonstrates character, for conduct is the expression of character.
