The Mental Obligation
Based upon the Fact that Christ is Teacher
"For an
example I gave to you that just as I myself did to you, you yourselves also
should keep on doing." John 13:15
It is the
function of the Teacher to give information, and such information that will
cause the learner to know the truth. This is precisely the purpose of the
Teacher Who has just set before the disciples a copy of what He wanted them to
do.
The word example is the effort of the Teacher to teach the learner what he should do.
The root of this word (hupedeiknumi) means to show by placing under or before the eyes. This word therefore comes to mean a sign, representation, figure, copy, pattern, or an example.
The word always calls for a repetition of the same thing.
Heb. 8:5
Jas. 5:10
2 Peter 2:6
Since, as Teacher, the information is sufficient, it is the mental obligation of the disciple to follow what he has been taught.
