JUDGMENT - OF LIVING ISRAELITES

Judgment of Living Israelites
cf. Ezek. 20:23-38 A.R.V.
"I lifted up mine hand unto them also in the wilderness, that I would scatter them among the heathen, and disperse them through the countries; Because they had not executed my judgments, but had despised my statutes, and had polluted my Sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers' idols. Wherefore I gave them also statutes that were not good, and judgments whereby they should not live; And I polluted them in their own gifts, in that they caused to pass through the fire all that openeth the womb, that I might make them desolate, to the end that they might know that I am the LORD. Therefore, son of man, speak unto the house of Israel, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Yet in this your fathers have blasphemed me, in that they have committed a trespass against me. For when I had brought them into the land, for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to them, then they saw every high hill, and all the thick trees, and they offered there their sacrifices, and there they presented the provocation of their offering: there also they made their sweet savor, and poured out there their drink offerings. Then I said unto them, What is the high place whereunto ye go? And the name thereof is called Bamah unto this day. Wherefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Are ye polluted after the manner of your fathers? and commit ye whoredom after their abominations? For when ye offer your gifts, when ye make your sons to pass through the fire, ye pollute yourselves with all your idols, even unto this day: and shall I be inquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will not be inquired of by you. And that which cometh into your mind shall not be at all, that ye say, We will be as the heathen, as the families of the countries, to serve wood and stone. As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out, will I rule over you: And I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out. And I will bring you into the wilderness of the people, and there will I plead with you face to face. Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead with you, saith the Lord GOD. And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant: And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the LORD."

The Subjects - vs. 34 - Living Israelites "You"

The Time - vs. 33 - "rule over you" - time of establishing the Kingdom.

The  Place - vs. 35-36 - cf. Rev. 12:6, 14
"And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days."
"And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent."

The Basis - vs. 36 - As in the wilderness

The Results - vs. 37-38 - Purge out rebels; righteous brought into the bond of the Covenant.
Ezek. 20:38-44 "And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the LORD. As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord GOD; Go ye, serve ye every one his idols, and hereafter also, if ye will not hearken unto me: but pollute ye my holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols. For in mine holy mountain, in the mountain of the height of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, there shall all the house of Israel, all of them in the land, serve me: there will I accept them, and there will I require your offerings, and the first fruits of your oblations, with all your holy things. I will accept you with your sweet savor, when I bring you out from the people, and gather you out of the countries wherein ye have been scattered; and I will be sanctified in you before the heathen. And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall bring you into the land of Israel, into the country for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to your fathers. And there shall ye remember your ways, and all your doings, wherein ye have been defiled; and ye shall loathe yourselves in your own sight for all your evils that ye have committed. And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have wrought with you for my name's sake, not according to your wicked ways, nor according to your corrupt doings, O ye house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD."
Mal. 3:1-6 "Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness. Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years. And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts. For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed."

JUDGMENT - OF THE BELIEVER'S WORKS

The Judgment of the Believer's Works

(See passages on examination of the Church to follow).

The Subjects of this Judgment: 2 Cor. 5:10 those who are truly saved.
"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad."
Time: 1 Cor. 3:10-15, 1 Pet. 5:4; Rev. 22:12 at sometime between the translation of the Church and the Marriage.
"According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire."
"And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away."
"And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be."

Place: 2 Cor. 5:10  The Bema Seat - not the throne of His glory.
"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad."

Basis: 1 Cor. 3:12-13 The enduring quality (kind) of works. Here in this passage are plenty of works, but some will be burned because they have no enduring quality.
"Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is."

Results: 1 Cor. 3:14 - Receive a reward.
"If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward."
1 Cor. 3:15 - Suffer loss. This last verse does not excuse a sinful life. At this point Paul is talking about service.
"If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire."
These words describe a possible condition of a saint of God in the Day of final testing. The subject is one of service. That of life is not in view except as in some senses that is always involved in service. As we have seen, the saint of God is in fellowship with the Lord in responsibility. That means work; and Paul here deals with it under the figure of building upon the foundation. All such building is to be tested by fire. That which is true and precious will be made more beautiful by the fire. That which is false and unworthy will be destroyed by the fire. When that is so, the man himself will be "saved, get so as through fire." His ultimate salvation will be secured by the destruction of his work. Can anything be more calculated to give us cause in our work? What are we building? That is, what sort of material are we laying upon the foundation? The things of gold, silver, costly stones, are the things of eternity. Those of wood hay, stubble, are those which are only of time. When the saints of God are tempted to forget the spiritual and eternal implication and application of all they do, they are in danger of doing work which must be destroyed in order that they may be saved. We are humbled by the grace which will destroy our unworthy works to save us are constrained thereby to take how we build.

JUDGEMENT - OF THE CROSS

The Judgment of the Cross

  • The Cross was a Final Judgment of God
Isa. 53:6, 10a "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all." "Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin,"
Zech. 13:7 "Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones."
2 Cor. 5:21 "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."
Gal. 3:13 "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:"
Matt. 27:46 - "And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"

Either he was forsaken or he wasn't. If he was, Why did God forsake him? Does God forsake good men when they die? No! Therefore we conclude that he was being held responsible for sin.
Heb. 9:26c-28 One death - One judgment joined together. "For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation."
  •  The Cross Involved a Three-fold Judgment
l. of sin - by imputation Christ was not guilty; sin was imputed to him.
Rom. 8:3 "For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:"  in Jesus.
2. of the believers - by identification (God counts us as if we died)
2 Cor. 5:13 A.R.V. "One died for all; therefore all died."
Gal. 2:20 A.R.V. "I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live."
Rom. 6:3, 5 "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:"
3. of the world and its prince - by implication
John 12:31 Refers to His death. Viewpoint is before Calvary. "Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out."
John 16:11 Viewpoint looks back to Calvary. "Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged."
Sin of man - proof is unbelief in Christ;
Righteousness of Christ - proof is Ascension
Judgment of Satan
  •  Results of the Judgment of the Cross
As to sin: John 1:29 "Taketh away the sin of the world."
Heb. 9:26 "Put away sin" - disannulled. Must refer to guilt of sin.
Heb. 10:26-31 "For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."

As to world and Satan: sinful world system which is utterly opposed to God.
1 John 5:19 A.R.V. Both are completely doomed, because Christ died. "And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness."
1 John 2:15-17 "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever."
John 8:44 Why both are irrevocably sinful. "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."
As to the believer: Law has no jurisdiction over a dead man (Rom. 6).
Rom. 7:6 From the dominion of sin - delivered - Cleared. "But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter."
Rom. 8:1 From condemnation. "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."
Gal. 6:14 From and its doom Rom. 6:6-7 From bondage of sin. "But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world."
  • The Cross Stands as the Supreme Exhibition and Harbinger of all Final Judgment
l. Reveals righteous judgment of God - Rom. 3:25 When Christ chose to bear the guilt of men, divine justice struck him down.
"Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;"
2. Separates men into two classes - John 3:14-18 Those who do not believe are already judged.
"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

THE SIX DIFFERENT JUDGMENTS IN THE BIBLE

THE SIX DIFFERENT JUDGMENTS

  • The Theory of General Judgment
Matt. 25:31-46 - This is of living nations for there is no resurrection of the dead
"When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal."

FINAL JUDGMENT - ITS JUDGE

THE JUDGE IN THE FINAL JUDGMENT

  • Judgment Belongs to God
Heb. 12:23 - "God, the Judge of all"
It is obvious that the Book of Hebrews was written to Christians, and we have no right to insist that Israelites during the millennium will also be Christians, without priests, without sacrifices, and without a temple. Saints like John the Baptist who died before Pentecost were not Christians (John 3:29, Matt. 11:11); and those who are saved following the rapture of the Church will likewise be excluded from membership in the Bride of Christ, though they will be "made perfect" like all the redeemed (Heb. 12:23).
Rom. 14:10, 12 A.R.V. "Give, account to God."
"But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ." "So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God."
  • But the Work has been Committed to the Son
John 5:22 In hands of Son. "For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:"
Acts 17:31 "Because He hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom He hath ordained; whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead."
2 Cor. 5:10 "Bema seat of Christ"
"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad."
2 Tim. 4:1 "Christ who shall Judge"
"I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;"
  • Reasons why all Judgment is Delegated to the Son
1. As God, He has the necessary knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge of Motive, Means, result.
Col. 2:2-3 "That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgment of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."
Rev. 2:18, 23 "And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, Who hath His eyes like unto a flame of fire, and His feet are like fine brass;" "And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works."

2. As man, He understands human life by personal experience. Experiential knowledge as over against descriptive knowledge.
John 5:27 Reason the Son is Judge. "And hath given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of man."
As David's son He is promised the kingdom; and judgeship being included in the promised theocratic Davidic government, the Father only judges through this Son, the promises based on the covenant require such authority to be given to and to be manifested through the covenanted seed. Hence, as the second Adam recovering the Dominion lost by the first Adam; as the woman's seed who is to crush the serpent's head; as the promised seed of Abraham who is to inherit the land, possess the gate of His enemies, and make all nations blessed; as the son of David who is to arrange so gloriously over the earth; as that God-man who perfects salvation through a theocratic ordering-it is indispensably necessary for Him to occupy such a position to meet the predetermined plan of redemption compare John 5:22, 27. Cf. Acts 10:42. Christ went to the cross for all men. Some wish to pay the penalty themselves. Some wish to submit to His covering. It was necessary for Christ to be raised to be the judge so they can pay their own penalty. Those who believe in Him needed assurance that the debt was paid so they had hope. Jesus has been appointed the Judge.
cf. Job 9:32-33 A.R.V. Incarnation invalidated Job's complaint. "For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment. Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both."
3. As Redeemer, He died to save sinners.
John 3:17 - Man will not be able to say I am dealing with a Judge who made no effort to save my soul.
"For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved."
4. As God-man, He is the only mediator between God and man.
1 Tim. 2:5 All men must deal with him either as Mediator or Judge.
"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;"
Note: The saints are somehow to be associated with Christ in work of judgment. No mere man can qualify as an absolute Judge.
1 Cor. 6:2-3 - Interpret with great reserve. This may refer to our millennial ministry.
"Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?"
The resurrected saints will apparently “judge the world” during the coming millennium, when Christ reigns and His people reign with Him (Rev. 2:26; 3:21; 20:4).

FINAL JUDGMENT - ITS NECESSITY AND CERTAINTY

NECESSITY AND CERTAINTY OF FINAL JUDGMENT

  • Declared in Scripture
The O.T. lays emphasis on present life; but final judgment is taught.
Dan. 12:2-3 "Some to everlasting life" - "some . . . to everlasting contempt."
The N.T. corresponds.
2 Tim. 4:1 "I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;"
2 Pet. 3:7 "But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men."
  • Demanded by the character of God
Hab. 1:13 "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil."
Psa. 50:21 "Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne."
Cf. Psa. 89:14 "Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face."
  •  Attested and Foreshadowed by the Moral Conscience of Mankind
Rom. 2:1-2 by Judging sin in others. "Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things. But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things."
Rom. 2:15-16 by Judging sin in oneself. "Which show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel."
  • Anticipated in the judgments of history. Haman; Ahab.
Gal. 6:7 Operates many times in the present life, but not always. "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."
  • Required by Inequalities of this Present Life
Psa. 73:1-18 The prosperous wicked enter suddenly into judgment.
Luke 16:25 God balances life's inequalities. "But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented."
  • Made Certain by the Cross
John 12:31, 33 argument If the judgment of God fell on Christ who bore our sins, then surely it will fall on those who elect to bear their own sins.
"Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out."
"This he said, signifying what death he should die."
  • Guaranteed by Resurrection of Christ
Acts 17:31 God has committed all judgment into the hands of his Son (John 5:22, 27) and has raised Him from the dead to carry out this charge.
"Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead."
"For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:"
"And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man."

JUDGMENT - ITS PURPOSE AND NATURE

PURPOSE AND NATURE OF JUDGMENT

  • We should Distinguish between Temporal and Final Judgments
Acts 7:7 - cf. Isa. 26:9 Temporal
"And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place."
"With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness."
Heb. 6:2 - cf. John 12:48 Final and eternal judgment
"Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment."
"He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day."
  • The purpose of Final Judgment:
Negatively: not to determine the character of the judged.
Positively: to reveal their works, and reward them accordingly.

  • The Three Elements Involved in such Judgment
1. The Revelation of the facts.
2. The Pronouncement of the judgment. (Evaluation of deeds ends the pronouncement.)
3. The Execution of the Award or Sentence.

THE DOCTRINE OF JUDGMENT - ITS WORDS

THE DOCTRINE OF JUDGMENT

  • THE WORDS
  • In Old Testament
shaphat - to establish or decide Exod. 20:12 "For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD."
- trans. Judge generally (175 times)
mishpot - the noun - a judgment Gen. 18:19 "For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him."
trans. Judgment (294 times)
  • In New Testament
krino - literally "to separate"
trans. Judge (87 times), etc.
krisis - a "separation by judgment" Act of Judging - trans. Judgment (41 times) Matt. 5:21 "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:"
krima - a judgment - the sentence of a judge Matt. 7:2 "For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again."
trans. judgment 13, condemnation 5, damnation 7 Note: All these words sometimes have prefix "kata"
Thus indicating the adverse outcome of the judgment
cf. Rom. 5:16 - "Krima unto Katakrima" "And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification."
"And kai not ou as wV it was by dia one eiV that sinned amartanw, so is the gift dwrhma: for gar men the judgment krima was by ek one eiV to eiV condemnation katakrima, but de the free gift carisma is of ek many poluV offences paraptwma unto eiV justification dikaiwma."

THE RESURRECTION BODY - ITS ATTRIBUTES

The Attributes of the Resurrection Body
1 Cor. 15:42-49
"So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly."

As to internal nature, it will be incorruptible in material. Cf. vs. 42. "So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption"
The Greek word translated “incorruption” is aphtharsia. It is translated “immortality” in 2 Tim. 1:10. Another word, athanasia, is rendered as “immortality” in 1 Cor. 15:53-54. The new bodies which believers will receive at the resurrection will thus be both “without corruption” and “without death.” Note that these both apply to the spiritual body (1 Cor. 15:44). Both pagans and New Agers believe in the “immortality of the soul,” either in an eternally disembodied state or in reincarnation in another body. The Scriptures, however, clearly teach the resurrection of the dead (1 Cor. 15:42, 1 Thess. 4:16-17).
No longer any decay. 1 Cor. 6:13 no longer true. "Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body."
As to external appearance, it will be glorious. Cf. 43b. "It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:"
It is sown in dishonor. The last stroke of the mortician is to remove that if possible. But to no avail.

As to inherent capacity, it will be powerful in operation. Cf. 43b. "It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:"
Now the body is weak, without necessary strength to perform all its duties.

Christ could pass through walls, the tomb, etc. like radium. Space was no concern to Him.

THE RESURRECTION BODY - ITS NATURE

The Nature of the Resurrection Body

1 Cor. 15:44 declares that this body is spiritual. This does not mean a body of spirit. "It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body."At resurrection the spirit is endowed with a new and indissoluble relation to the material body (Rom 6:9). "Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him."
Quickening of the spirit spoken of in John 5:26 (source of life to others). "For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;"
Become a life-giving spirit.
Become a spiritual, pneumatical person 1 Cor. 15:44 no longer able to suffer separation (Rev 1:18, Rom 6:9). "It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body." "I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death." "Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him."
i.e. His kingdom is without end Heb 5:6, a priest forever. "As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec."
Resurrection was the Incarnate Son's revelation of the heavenly man. The Lord was His own witness to His resurrection, showing forth His own glory, the Head of a new creation-
1. comprised of 3 parts and immortal.
2. The glory of the immortal man emits letting others see Matt 17:3, 2 Pet 1:17. "And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him." "For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
3. This is true of the church also Matt 13:43, whereby we now have a body of humiliation but at our resurrection we shall be just like Him. Perfect life making revelations to reasonable beings making closer communion possible with the Father and blessedness. "Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear."
4. Making possible a perfect doing the will of the Father both in worship and service for we are priests and kings with Him.

The natural body is one of flesh and bones in which the life giving element and the sustaining principle is in the blood. Cf. Lev. 17:11. "For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul."
The spiritual body is a body of flesh and bones in which the life sustaining principle is no longer blood, but is the presence of the spirit of God. Cf. Rom. 8:11. "For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul."
Christ's body as born of Mary was a natural body in which there was blood to sustain it. But one day he shed his blood. Cf. Matt. 20:28 "To give his life (psyche) a ransom for many."
Christ's body when he rose from the dead was flesh and bone (Luke 24:39) that was made alive and sustained not by blood, but by the Spirit (Rom. 8:11).

The Spirit of God is the fountain of eternal youth. When we get our resurrection bodies, we shall have equality with the angels. Luke 20:36 declares that in the resurrection, there will be no sex for propagation, and there will be no need for that for there will be no death. "Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection."

THE RESURRECTION BODY - ITS STRUCTURE

The Structure of the Resurrection Body

  •  Adaptation to the Sphere of Life is the Underlying Principle Here
1 Cor. 15:50 declares that "flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God." On the basis of this the following things can be affirmed.
 1. The resurrection body will not be one of flesh and blood. 1 Cor. 15:50. This is the sort of body that is adapted to the present life, but not the heavenly sphere. "Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption."
The Apostle Paul not only sees this inheritance of the Kingdom in future time but definitely excludes it from the present age by placing it after the resurrection and rapture of the Church because flesh and blood cannot inherit it.
Where I go flesh and blood cannot survive long enough. The flesh has desires it needs to be rid of, for they cause death and where I go is an eternal place. John 13:33
2. There are various types of bodies so far as structure is concerned. 1 Cor. 15:39 Not all flesh is the same flesh. Some body are adapted sea, air, ground, etc. "All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds."
One of the basic thrusts of theistic evolution, of course, is that all flesh is indeed "the same flesh," the human race being a mere twig on the branch of anthropoid mammals. Paul's statement is in obvious contradiction to this theory.
3. The resurrection body will be one that is made of flesh and bone. Luke 24:39. "Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have."
my feet It seems the Lord Himself answers modern liberals who interpret the resurrection as spiritual, rather than physical. His spirit never died so could not be resurrected. He also refutes those who argue that the “appearances” to His disciples were “spiritual appearances,” or even hallucinations. Even they at first thought He was a spirit, but He then showed them the scars of the spikes that had pierced His hands and feet, and then even ate part of a fish and a honeycomb before them (Luke 24:37, 40, 42). They could no longer doubt the reality of His bodily resurrection, nor did they ever doubt it thereafter.
flesh and bones It is significant that Christ did not use the more common phrase, “flesh and blood.” His blood had been shed on the cross, as the price of our redemption (1 Peter 1:18-19), and now “flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 15:50).Life is in the blood, and He had a body full of life.

THE RESURRECTION BODY - ITS SUBSTANCE

The Substance of the Resurrection Body

The resurrection body need not contain a single particle of the body that was laid away in the tomb. A body can be the same in identity even though it be totally different in substance.
1 Cor. 15:37 "Thou soweth not that body that shall be, but bare grain."
They used to say that the particles change periodically in the body every seven years. But I have heard that advances in medical science has led to the conclusion that this happens every year or oftener than that. But even with this change of particles, the identity remains the same. Scars give evidence of this. Also the voice; features. That is, identity is based upon a principle of organization, even though substance changes.
1 Cor. 15:36-38 suggests a principle of continuity; though this is not an analogy, it does illustrate.
"Thou fool, that which thou sows is not quickened, except it die: And that which thou sows, thou sows not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain: But God gives it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body."

That this principle of organization and continuity is constantly in operation is evident from any number of things. For every person there is something apparently that constitutes the normal for maturity. So the parts of the body stop growing. Whenever they pass a general average there is the freak.

THE RESURRECTION BODY - ITS IDENTITY

The Identity of the Resurrection Body

  • The Resurrection Body of the Christian will be Exactly the Same Body as he has now as to Identity

1 Cor. 15:38 says "To every seed his own body."
"His own body" expresses a universal rule.

Phil. 3:21 says "change" but not exchange.
"Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself."
If there were a new body, this would constitute creation and not resurrection.

Mary recognized Christ at the tomb by His voice.
Thomas recognized Him by the scars
Throughout eternity He will appear as the Lamb slain.
Two objections will almost surely be raised ‑
1. Liberals will say - Well, what difference does it make anyway. The answer probably will be and must be that sentiment demands an identical body for purpose of recognition.
2. Others will say - but corruption will cause disintegration of the particles of the body, and some of these may be used in other bodies. They may cite 1 Cor. 15:53 "Corruption;"
"For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality."

NOTE: At present, the whole creation is in “the bondage of corruption” (Romans 8:21), and this certainly includes our mortal bodies. Scientifically, this condition is known as the law of increasing entropy, theologically as the curse on the ground (Genesis 3:17) because of sin. This law will be set aside as far as our present bodies are concerned, at this first phase of Christ’s second coming, then finally repealed in entirety at the final phase (Revelation 22:3).

THE RESURRECTION BODY - ITS REALITY

The Reality of the Resurrection Body

  • This Means that it will be a Genuine Body
1 Cor. 15:44 declares that there is a natural body; and if there is such; then there is also a spiritual body. Our likeness to him in change of body. We will experience attributes of goodness to perfection. Some of the human powers will be intensified. But attributes of greatness will never become ours (Phil. 3:21).
"It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body."
"Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself."
Christ gave demonstration of the reality of the resurrection body on the night of that first Lord's day. Luke 24:36-43 "Did eat before them."
"And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. And he took it, and did eat before them."
After 60 long years, John still remembered that event and wrote of it in his first epistle (1 John 1:1-2).
"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)"

THE RESURRECTION BODY - ITS PATTERN

THE RESURRECTION BODY - ITS PATTERN

Almost nothing is revealed about the resurrection body of the unrighteous. Perhaps the most we can say is that it will not have immortality. This seems to be quite evident from the fact that it will be subject to the second death.
Rev. 2:11 "He that overcomes shall not be hurt of the second death."
Rev. 20:6 "Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power."
Rev. 20:14 "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death."
Rev. 21:8 "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."

It is extremely interesting to note how much the Bible has to say about the body of the saved. Most of this material is recorded in 1 Cor. 15:35-58; although there are references elsewhere within the New Testament that are very valuable.
1 Cor. 15:35 raises two questions or objections to which the remainder of the material is given over in answer.
"But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?"

The first one "How are the dead raised up?" That is, what is the possibility and process?
The second one "And with what body do they come?" That is, what are the properties?
  • The Pattern of the Resurrection Body
It will be exactly like the resurrection body of Christ.
Adam was the head of the old race - 1 Cor. 15:45-49
"And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

Christ is the head of the new race.
And believers "shall bear the image of the heavenly." - 1 Cor. 15:49
Phil. 3:21 - "Fashioned like unto His glorious body"
1 John 3:2 - This refers to the spiritual primarily, but will not exclude the physical since the two are in one person.  "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is."
Jesus died at 33, in the prime of life. The implication is that we shall be at our best. We shall have perfect bodies, bodies that are fully developed, finished complete. This may suggest that babies will not appear as babies in the resurrection, but fully mature.

THE CERTAINTY OF THE RESURRECTION

THE CERTAINTY OF THE RESURRECTION

  • Taught by the Word of God
Confirmed by God's Promise and Oath - Heb. 6:17-20  "Wherein God, willing more abundantly to show unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters into that within the veil; Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec."
Based upon the Redemptive Work of Christ - Rom. 8:23 "And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body."
  •  Guaranteed by the Resurrection of Christ Himself - 1 Cor. 15:20 First fruits, 1 Pet. 1:3-5
"But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept."
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time."
Declared as an accomplished fact in the mind and purpose of God - Eph. 2:6 "And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus."

Supported by the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit - 1 Cor. 6:13b, 14, 19  "....Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body."
"And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power."
"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?"

THE ORDER OF THE RESURRECTION

THE ORDER OF THE RESURRECTION

INTRODUCTION:

1. The Resurrection not a single event.
2. All are to be raised, "but each in his own order" - 1 Cor. 15:22-24 ARV (Physical) "tagma" tagma tagma tag'-mah is a military term - rank, class, division, company
"22  For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
23  But every man in his own order: Christ the first fruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.
24  Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power."
 Note the three main ranks:
"Christ the firstfruits"
"Then they that are Christ's at His coming" (epeita - epeita epeita ep'-i-tah time sequence)
"Then (cometh) the end" (eita eita eita i'-tah - see Mark 4:28 and 1 Cor. 15:5-7) "Blade . . . then ear . . . then full corn" (Not all at once)
  •  The Resurrection of "Christ the First fruits"
Time. A.D. 32 ?
Absolutely in time and place - Col. 1:18 "prototokos ek" prwtotokoV prototokos pro-tot-ok'-os ek ek ek or ex ex- position
Acts 26:23 "protos" prwtoV protos pro'-tos - time

Persons - certainly our Lord Himself.
- What about Matt. 27:52-53? cf. Rom. 1:4 "Declared to be the Son of God with Power . . . by the resurrection." "After his resurrection"
Since they appeared it may be a real resurrection His own resurrection and resurrection of saints.
Result - Many things I shall not discuss here, but
1. Immortality for Himself (N.T. Sense not Philosophic Sense) Rom. 6:9, Heb. 7:16, 25
"Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him."
"Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life." "Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them."
 2. Guarantee of a Resurrection for all men - 1 Cor. 15:23 "firstfruits" Pledge that more is coming.
"But every man in his own order: Christ the first fruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming."
John 14:19 "Because I live ye shall live also"
Rev. 1:18 "I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death."
"The Risen Christ is the beginning of the history of the end" (Luthardt quoted in Meyer)
  •  The Resurrection of them "That Are Christ's"
The Time - "at His coming" ev parousia en  parousia parousia par-oo-see'-ah Covers a period of time
1 Cor. 15:23 "But every man in his own order: Christ the first fruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming."
Names applied to this Resurrection indicates its special nature
Luke 14:14 "Resurrection of the Just"
John 5:29 "Resurrection of life"
Heb. 11:35 "A better Resurrection"
Luke 20:35 "Resurrection from the dead (ek)"
Phil. 3:11 "Our resurrection out from among the dead"
Rev. 20:6 "First resurrection"
The Persons involved - probably several companies
1 Thess. 4:13-18 - Church
Dan. 12:1-2 - O.T. Saints
Rev. 11:11-12 - Two Witnesses
Rev. 7:14, 20:4 - Tribulation Martyrs
NOTE: When the last sub-division is raised, the Holy Spirit writes, "This is the first resurrection" (Rev. 20:5), thus indicating that this special Resurrection is complete and finished. At this point the first resurrection is done.
 The Result
They put on immortality
Rev. 20:6 Second death has no power "Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years."
Luke 20:36 "Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection."
They are given a place of special honor
Rev. 20:4-6 "And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years."

The Resurrection of "The End"
"The end" must refer to the final Resurrection of Rev. 20:11-14 1000 years after the first one.
Context of 1 Cor. 15:22-24 demands idea of Resurrection
"For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Christ the first fruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming. Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power."
"The end" Resurrection comes after Christ's millennial kingdom cf. Rev. 20:7 and 12.
"And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison," "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works."

"The end" Resurrection comes when death is destroyed
Cf. Meyer 356, Olshausen 382, Weymouth margin

Special names are applied to this "end" Resurrection
John 5:29 Resurrection of Damnation - Doom and Judgment of those raised. "And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation."
Acts 24:15 Resurrection of the unjust - Character of those raised. "And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust."
The Persons included in this End-Resurrection are all unsaved
Acts 24:15 "Unrighteous" - moral description
Rev. 20:12 "And the dead . . . stand before God" - Spiritual description

The Result of this End-Resurrection is twofold:
Rev. 20:12-13 Judgment according to works "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works."
Rev. 20:14-15 Infliction of the Second Death  "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire."
Cf. Rom. 3:20 Proves they are lost. "Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin."

THE EXTENT OF THE RESURRECTION

EXTENT OF THE RESURRECTION

  • In the Old Testament
The OT knows nothing about a "General Resurrection"
The Old Testament teaches Resurrection only for the Righteous "thy people" (including Messiah)
See Dan. 12:2 cf. vs. 1. suggests an exception.
"And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt."
"And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which stands for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book."
But Resurrection of Unrighteous is in OT by implication
Doctrine of Judgment - Eccl. 12:14 "Whether it be good or evil."
"For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil."
  • Doctrine of Man as soul and body
  • In the Inter-Testament Literature
Resurrection for both Righteous and Unrighteous. Cf. I.S.B.E. --Unrighteous in Enoch 22:11, Baruch 50:2, 2 Esdra 5:45, 7:32
Even here we find no "General Resurrection"
  •  In the New Testament
Resurrection for both Righteous and Unrighteous - Acts 24:15 "Resurrection of just and unjust."
"And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust."
Only one exception - Righteous living at Second Coming of Christ.
1 Cor. 15:51 "Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,"
Matt. 13:43, 49 "Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear." "So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,"
Matt. 25:46 "And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal."
Resurrection for Unrighteous demanded by NT doctrine of Final Judgment
John 5:29 "And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation."
Rev. 20:12 "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works."

GENERAL NATURE OF THE RESURRECTION

GENERAL NATURE OF THE RESURRECTION

  •  A Wrong Theory - Denies that Resurrection has to do with the body
1. Liberal Form - Resurrection is merely the survival of the spirit after death Lyman Abbott)
2. Soul-Sleep Form - Awakening of the soul to life is the Res. (7th Day Adventist Russellism)

  • Supposed Basis of this Theory
They say the expression "Resurrection of the Body" does not occur in Scripture. True-but the idea is there.
Platonic dualism and Gnostic contempt for the body
  • Certain Biblical Texts which are misinterpreted
1 Pet. 3:18 "In the Spirit" - Not a contrast between body and Spirit  "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:"
1 Cor. 15:44 - Two kinds of Bodies - Not a contrast of body and spirit.  "It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body."
Matt. 22:31-33 (Favorite with Modernists) See preceding pages. God of living-insisting that the living is in Spirit only.  "But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine."
Acts 23:8 - "Nor Spirit" Even the spirit disappears. Sadducees deny two things - not three.  "For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both."
  •  Biblical View of Resurrection - It Concerns the Body Primarily
See the Biblical view of Man. I Thess. 5:23 "Body, Soul, Spirit." Any less of these elements would be the mutilation of the man.
Meaning of Anastasis "stand up."
Resurrection of Body is distinguished from the bestowal of spiritual life John 5:24-25 with 28-29
24  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
25  Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
28  Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29  And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
Rom, 8:10 with 11 "And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you."
Christian Redemption includes body as well as spirit. Rom. 8:23 "Our body" "And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body."
Resurrection involves a transformation of the body. Phil. 3:21 "Fashion anew." "Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself."
Resurrection is affirmed of both good and bad. Acts 24:15  "And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust."
Arg? The unsaved have no spiritual life, therefore the resurrection can only be bodily.
Resurrection of Christ Himself defines its nature. John 2:19-20 "Temple of his body" "Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?"
Paul specially condemns one form of the antibody theory. 2 Tim. 2:18 Resurrection is past. This may have reference to Christ. "Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some."
Burton Scott Eastin -
Such a phrase as a "purely spiritual immortality" rests upon a metaphysical dualism that is today obsolete. One thing is certain, the enemies of Christ believed in the resurrection, or at least they believed that Christ claimed He would rise bodily, for they guarded the Tomb, and they sealed the Tomb.

Dan. 3:1 ff (vs. 5) "Fall down and worship the golden image."

Antiochus Epiphanes Vile person (vs. 21)
Dan. 11:21-32 Antichrist directly referred to in verses 25-26.
"And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.
22  And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant.
23  And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people.
24  He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers' fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time.
25  And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him.
26  Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain.
27  And both these kings' hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.
28  Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land.
29  At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter.
30  For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.
31  And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.
32  And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits."

  • Present Tendencies
The Mystery of lawlessness already working.
2 Thess. 2:7 In Paul's Day "Mystery of lawlessness"

The Denial of coming of Christ in the flesh. People today have thrown the Bible under the bus. Hollywood continually misrepresents Him as to His person and Deity. And now O'Reilly has mis-represented Him as to his personal take on His life. The Bible does not take precedence in mans understanding of His 1st or His 2nd coming and is not taken literally.
1 Jn. 4:2-3 1st Coming - Incarnation
2 Jn. 7 A.R.V. 2nd Coming

The Antichrist will use this very denial to secure allegiance during this time.

REVELATION OF RESURRECTION IN THE BIBLE

REVELATION OF RESURRECTION IN THE BIBLE

  •  In Old Testament
Foreshadowed in Old Testament types
Gen. 2:21-22 cf. John 19:34 with Rom. 5:14 "Figure of him that was to come"
Gen. 22:5 with Heb. 11:19 (Abraham believed God able to raise from the dead).
Rom. 4:19-25
Num. 17:6-10 "Aaron's rod that budded."
  •  Implied in Jehovah's power and relation to His people
Deut. 32:39 "I kill and I make alive"
Exod. 3:6 with Matt. 22:31-33 Subject here is the resurrection of the body, not the immortality of the soul.

  • Syllogism:
1. God has power.
2. Soul continues to live after death.
3. Hebrew idea of Body as part of man is missing.
4. Death cannot sever the relation of the person with God. (God "is" a God of the living.)
5. Therefore, if the man is one, and the body is an integral part of man, and the soul continues, then the body must someday be raised--this last conclusion is not stated in scripture, but it is implied.
  • Revealed in Old Testament prophecy
Job 14:13-15; 19:23-27
Psa. 16:10-11; 17:14-15; 49:14-15 ARV; 73:24
Isa. 25:7-8; 26:19-20; 53:10
Jer. 31:15-17
Ezek. 37:1-14? Physical or National Resurrection? - Valley of Dry Bones.
Dan. 12:2
Hos. 6:1-3; 13:14
  •  Confirmed in Old Testament History
1 Kings 17:17-24
2 Kings 4:32-35
Jonah 2:1-2, 10
NOTES: The late revelation of the Resurrection fits very accurately the hope of Israel and the historical situation. The Godly Jews asked how he could share in a Kingdom after his death. The doctrine of the resurrection was the answer to that problem. Inter-testament literature is full of this subject.
  •  In the New Testament
  • Amplified in the teaching of our Lord
John 2:19-21 Christ's resurrection.
John 5:28-29 Resurrection of all men, good and bad.

  • Confirmed la His acts of power.
Luke 7:12-15 Widow's Son
Luke 8:41-42, 49-56 Daughter of Jairus
John 11:41-44 Lazarus
Matt. 11:5 Others - "the dead are raised up."
  •  Demonstrated by His own Resurrection.
1 Cor. 15:20 "But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept."
cf. Acts 26:23 - "The First"
This is the first real resurrection in all history. The body was changed. This is not a resuscitation of life as it was laid down (1 Tim. 6:16). "Who only hath immortality."
  •  Fully revealed in N.T. Doctrine and Prophecy
Resurrection of Christ is affirmed as an accomplished fact and made the keystone of NT doctrine.
(1 Cor. 15:12-20)
12  Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
13  But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:
14  And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
15  Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.
16  For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
17  And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
18  Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
19  If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
20  But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of them that slept.
  •  A person; his death, his resurrection is the Gospel
1. If Christ be not risen - there is no resurrection. 13
2. If Christ be not risen - then preaching is vain. 14
3. If Christ be not risen - then your faith is vain. 14
4.  If Christ be not risen - then preachers are false witnesses. 15
5. If Christ be not risen - then your faith has accomplished nothing you are in your sins. 17
6. If Christ be not risen - then the Christian dead are perished. 18
7. If Christ be not risen - then living Christians are most miserable. 19
Resurrection of all men is affirmed as a future accomplishment and its doctrinal bearings are explained. (1 Cor. 15:20 ff)
20  But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of them that slept.
21  For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
22  For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
23  But every man in his own order: Christ the first fruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.
24  Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
25  For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
26  The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
27  For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
28  And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
29  Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?
30  And why stand we in jeopardy every hour?
31  I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.
32  If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for to morrow we die.
33  Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
34  Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
35  But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?
36  Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die:
37  And that which thou sows, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain:
38  But God gives it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.
39  All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.
40  There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.
41  There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differs from another star in glory.
42  So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:
43  It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:
44  It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.
45  And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
46  Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.
47  The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.
48  As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.
49  And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
50  Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
51  Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52  In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53  For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54  So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
55  O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
56  The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
57  But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58  Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
