The Description of the Author
"And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass;"
The Son
of God
"The Son
of the God." No more explicit designation could be given to Christ. This is the only place this title is given to Christ in the Revelation. It is implied in 1:6; 2:27; 3:5, 21; 14:1. This adds solemnity to the features of the vision of chapter one.
His
Eyes Like a Flame of Fire
These eyes
are searching and penetrating. There is nothing hidden from them, and where
there is sin, this flame devours it.
His
Feet Like Fine Brass
Brass or
bronze is the symbol of judgment. Those feet trample down every opposing force
and ruthlessly crush every evil thing. Bronze was a very hard alloy manufactured
at Thyatira and used for weapons. So the figure is apt.
Searcheth the Reins and Hearts
"And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works."Searching continually the hidden thoughts, purposes, motives, and the moral and spiritual movements of every individual. In the Old Testament this was the special prerogative and power of Jehovah (Jer. 17:10).
"I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings."
