Why so much perversion? It is one of the Great doctrines; absolutely essential to give a complete view of the work of Christ. Satan there­fore hates it. It definitely hurts his business.

• The "Spiritual" Theory: He Came in the Holy Spirit on Pentecost

Supposed Basis : John 14:1-3; 16-18, 21-23

Element of Truth - Christ did come in nature on the day of Pentecost, but so did the Father (John 14:23).

The Mistake = Confusing the spiritual presence of Christ with the physical, bodily, personal, visible presence of Christ in same body in which he went away.

Acts 3:19-20 - Peter looked forward to the coming of Christ. Both of these took place after the Spirit had come.

• The "Judgment" Theory: He Came in the Destruction of Jerusalem

Supposed Basis - Matt. 24:1-3 "And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to show him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?"

Matt. 24:29-30, 34 Which Generation - the one which sees these things happen.

Matt. 16:20-28 (of. 17:1-5) This is what Jesus will look like then He comes again.

Element of Truth - Destruction of Jerusalem was a providential judgment. 'The Judge (Christ) in a sense did come in judgment. Every judgment is in a sense of a coming of Christ in power.

The Mistake -Confusing the providential demonstrations of His power, with the personal, visible coming.

Christ does receive every believer at death. But He doesn't leave heaven. Stephen saw Him in heaven.

The Mistake - Confusing the gracious work of Christ with his bodily return.

The Mistake - Association of Second Coming with ushering in of Final State (of the world).

The Mistake - Rule out any millennial reign of Christ.

 

Best Answer - Doctrine of the kingdom is quite plain in the scriptures.

Unphilosophical - How men would be gotten from this sinful age into the perfect state. Makes no provision for bridging the gap. Fails to give due regard for life in the flesh. Why was man made in the first place if no provision is made for reaching a climax.

• How do you interpret Old Testament texts picturing Sheol as the place of no knowledge?

Psalm 6:5 "In death no remembrance of me!"
Isa. 38:18 "For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth"
Hezekiah, the Jew, thought of existence in terms of the present life.
Eccl. 9:10 "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest"
Materialistic view of the man under the sun. This statement is no more a divine revelation concerning the state of the dead than any other conclusion of "the Teacher" (Eccl. 1:1). No one would quote Eccl. 9:2 as a divine revelation. These reasoning of man apart from divine revelation are set down by inspiration just as the words of Satan (Gen 3:4; Job 2:4 - 5; etc.) are so recorded. But that life and consciousness continue between death and resurrection is directly affirmed in Scripture (Isa 14:9 - 11; Mat 22:32; Mark 9:43 - 48; Luke 16:19 - 31; 2 Cor 5:6 - 8; Phil 1:21 - 23; Rev 6:9 - 11).

• Why does the Bible speak of death as a "sleep"?

It is a euphemism for that which is a dreaded experience.
It is a word describing the fact that death is temporary.
There is a Resurrection for all dead.
In the New Testament a special word is used meaning cessation or rest (cf. John 11:13). "Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep."
Jer. 51:39 "In their heat I will make their feasts, and I will make them drunken, that they may rejoice, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith the LORD."

When Lazarus died the angels carried him away. They must have carried him some place.

Possible exceptions:
Elijah & Enoch -  Possibly Moses -Enoch, who, like Elijah "was taken away so that he did not see death" (Heb. 11:5), was later placed into the realm of the righteous dead to await resurrection. Temporarily, Elijah appeared alive on the Mount of Transfiguration with Moses (who had died nearly 1,500 years earlier; cf. Deut. 34:5). But he was not resurrected. That will happen forty-two months after the resurrection/rapture of the Church (cf. Rev. 11:11-12). Another forty-two months will elapse before all pre-Pentecost saints and Tribulation martyrs will be raised (cf. Dan. 12:1-2; Rev. 20:4-6) to join all glorified Christians in ruling the world under Christ the Lord.

A common death would have been the body to the grave, and the soul to Sheol. But this was not common.

Sheol-Hades is not the final Hell of Scripture. Christ did not to into Hell as Apostle creed reads, etc.
A.V. mis-translation fostered this notion. All one needs to do to settle this is of. Rev. 20:14-15 for final place of punishment. "Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire."

Amos 9:2 Sheol is pictured as cruel, never satisfied, men can't bargain with it, inevitable. "Though they dig into Sheol, From there will My hand take them; And though they ascend to heaven, From there will I bring them down."
