ANNIHILATIONISM PLAYS WITH THE MEANING OF WORDS

Annihilationism Argues That The Word "Destroy" Means Extinction of Being

  • The Annihilationist's Argument: They say destruction means destruction, and destroy means destroy
Primary meaning of English word "Destroy" - means mar, pull down, ruin, make unfit for the purpose for which it was made. (See use of "destroy" in Magna Charta).
  • Meaning of the Greek words:
(Grk. apoleia)  - Matt. 7:13 - destruction cf. Matt. 26:8 - waste (apoleia)
"Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:"
"But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?"
Matt. 10:28 (Grk. apollumi) "destroy"  cf. Luke 15:24 - "was lost and is found" (apollumi)
"And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell."
"For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry."
(Grk. luo) - John 2:19 "Destroy this temple and in three days."
"Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."
(Grk. katargeo) - 2 Thess. 2:8  cf. Rev. 20:10 Christ does not annihilate the Antichrist. After a 1000 years he is still there.
"And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:"
Whatever "destroy" means, it does not mean Annihilation as it is used in Scripture.
