GENERAL CONCLUSION TO SANCTIFICATION

GENERAL CONCLUSION TO SANCTIFICATION

+ God the Father - the author of (the origin of sanctification)
John 17:6 Past "I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word."
John 17:17 Present "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."
John 17:24 Future "Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world."

+ God the Son - the Mediator of it.
Heb. 13:12 - His blood in past sanctification "Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate."
Eph. 5:25-26 - His Word in present sanctification "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;" "That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word."
1 John 3:2 - His presence in future sanctification "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is."
John 13:8 - Past, Present, Future. “No part” covers the entire expanse of time. “With” that intimate relation that signifies a sharing in common - of nature, fate, purpose, etc. "Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me."
+ God the Holy Spirit - the Agent of it.
1 Cor. 6:11 - past Sanctification "And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God."
cf. 1 Cor. 12:3 It is a work of the Spirit to bring sinner to appropriate Christ. "Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost."
1 Pet. 1:2 “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied."
Eph. 4:30 “And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”
Rom. 8:2 Law of Spirit of life. "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death."
2 Thess. 2:13 - present sanctification cf. 2 Cor. 3:18  "But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth." "But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."
Gal. 5:16, 22-23 walk in the spirit, the fruit of the spirit "This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith," "Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
Col. 3:5 “mortify, therefore your members” that is, put them to death strike them dead. "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry."
Rom. 8:13 “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live."
Eph. 6:17 “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Rom. 8:9-11 - future sanctification "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." "And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness." "But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you."

The Old Testament Types Pointing to Sanctification
-Past Sanctification - Blood of the brazen altar
                      - Present sanctification - Water of the laver cf. Ex. 30:20 with 1 Cor. 11:30 "When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn offering made by fire unto the LORD." "For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep." Because of this lack of discernment, each suffer bodily judgments; weakness of the body, sickness of the body, and death (the ultimate bodily judgment).
                      - Future Sanctification - The tent of meeting
cf. Ex. 24:6-11  Blood (6), Word (7), Vision of God (8). "And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basins; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar." "And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient." "And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words." "Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel:" "And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness." "And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand: also they saw God, and did eat and drink."

The New Testament Symbols of Sanctification:
-Past Sanctification - Bread and Cup
Heb. 13:12 "Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate."
1 Cor. 11:24-25 "And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me." "After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me."
Heb. 10:10 "By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."

              - Present Sanctification - Service of Feetwashing
John 13:10-12 with 15:3 "Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. "For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean." "So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?"

      -Future Sanctification - Lovefeast
1 Cor. 11:20, 33 with Rev. 19:6-9  "Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all." "For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean." "So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?" "Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another."
"And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth." "Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready." "And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints." "And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God."

Conclusion: See Eph. 5:25-27 for all three.
"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;" "That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word," "That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish." Past, Present, Future.

         Our Responsibility - Obey
2 Cor. 6:14 - 7:1 "Having these promises, let us cleanse ourselves."
                        Romans 6 -- Know (3); Reckon (11); Present (13); Obey (16).
"Know" takes us to past sanctification as the basis for present effects.

To make present sanctification work we must read the Word of God.
1 Pet. 2:1-2 "Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings," "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby."

-See Christ revealed in the Word of God.
2 Cor. 3:18 "But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."

- Obey the Word of God.
James 1:21-25 "Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls." "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." "For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:" "For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was." "But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed."

- Look for Christ's coming to give impetus for action.
1 John 3:2-3 "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." "And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure."
