THE OCCASION FOR THE SERVICE OF ANOINTING WITH OIL
lc. Formally the occasion is the specific call of the elders by
the sick one. But there is a possibility that the sick one does not know this
truth or may have forgotten it.
2c. Then it may be in order for the pastor to propose this to the sick one, or for some member of the congregation to ask whether this one would like to have the service.
3c. In the case of children, it is in order for the parents to call for the service or for the service to be suggested by pastor or people.
4c. While the exact way this service should be initiated cannot be prescribed absolutely, any one of a number of ways it may come about, any one of which would guard against the wholesale method of divine healers, and fall within the scope of God's will.
5c. It should be remembered that sickness is the occasion, and that usually this sickness is of serious nature. Since it is not possible to settle how sick the person must be before the service is called, the pastor should therefore allow sufficient latitude for the feeling of the people on this point. And after all, while a sickness may appear to us to be very minor, it is usually never minor to the sick one and in reality it may not be minor.
